Anche io ho avuto un problema simile pero' dovuto al touchpad.
Prova a mettere in grub tra le opzioni del kernel i8042.nomux
Ad esempio la mia e':
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.12-1.1398_FC4 ro root=LABEL=/boot apm=off
acpi=noirq rhgb quiet i8042.nomux
Oppure l'equivalente in lilo.conf.
