Under the usual conditions, I couldn't see any problem with
tmpfs for /tmp. I've now reverted to:

  Linux version 3.2.0-1-amd64 (Debian 3.2.7-1) (debian-kernel@lists.debian.org) 
(gcc version 4.6.2 (Debian 4.6.2-16) ) #1 SMP Tue Feb 28 15:35:32 UTC 2012

(still with tmpfs for /tmp) and I'll see whether the temporary freeze
problems reappear.
