Dear Andreas,

The version of libcifpp in trunk at github is newer than what is in Debian, but is already outdated. I'm in the last stage of releasing yet another, newer version that breaks binary (and API) compatibility.

I'm not sure when I will release this newer version, but the goal is before the end of next week.

I will create an update for the Debian version once the code is published and all tools that depend on it are ported to the new version (should happen in the same time frame).

regards, -maarten

Hi again,

this is just a ping to bring upstream versions in sync with the Debian
packages. Given that a renamed library takes 1-3 months in new queue we
should settle soon with what should be in the next stable Debian
release.

Kind regards

       Andreas.

I would love to update my code in Debian, but the trouble is that Debian
demands shared libraries and when they break binary compatibility you have
to update the SONAME. And that means a new entry in the queue and waiting
for months. By the time the new SONAME is accepted, me being upstream will
have broken binary compatibility again.
Thanks for the explanation. If you ask me it makes sense to stabelise
sometime in "autumn" since we will have freeze in beginning of next
year. So there should be enough time to pass NEW and adjust the
software stack.
And all my programs depend on libcifpp, which is in active development.

So, I'm a bit reluctant to update, it is so much work. If I were allowed to
make libcifpp a static library only, it would be much easier.
There is nobody stopping you to do things that are considered "dirty".
There are simply good reasons to use shared (*and* static) libraries and
thus I'd be happy if we could provide both if possible anyhow.
Anyway, I'll try to find some time to update the code myself.
Cool.

Thanks a lot for your support

        Andreas.

Hi Maarten,

I realised that several packages you are Uploader (and upstream author?)
for have new version numbers. Would you mind updating this software
stack? Its not really urgent - I just wanted to express that I will not
touch these in my current attempt to upgrade our outdated packages.

Kind regards

        Andreas.
