Yes. "apt-cache show" reveals that g++ has epoch 2. This solved my problem, thanks to James and everybody else who replied. BTW, the upstream author tried to compile his program with gcc 3.01 and did not succeed. I am not enough of an expert in C programming to solve a problem that he cannot solve.
