I have forwarded both those issues upstream [1], which combined with your pull request will hopefully result in being able to use the tarball directly and indeed remove the extra complexity caused by the use of git submodules once a new version is released. I'll work on the remaining issues (debian/control, debian/copyright) in the meantime, and once the new version is released will make sure that all references to the github repository are removed in favour of the PyPi tarball, and get everything ready for a final cleanup.
