You do realize that you can install 2.4.x kernel image packages from unstable/testing on a stable system, right? It doesn't require anything special to do that (but certain things like modutils and ipchains/netfilter may need updating, check the list archives for someone who has done this for potato). The simple fact is that a lot of systems still don't work with 2.4.x, and require a 2.2.x kernel. Also note that our release schedule is not driven by kernel releases. So just because we want a 2.4.x system, doesn't force our hand.
