A more recent issue I've encountered is with meson not handling RUNPATH correctly on merged-usr systems: https://github.com/mesonbuild/meson/issues/4392 I haven't filed a corresponding downstream bug report (yet). Would probably make sense to have such a bug for tracking this in Debian.
