Last week I upgraded a sarge system to etch and had a lot of spurious conffile problems with openssh. /etc/ssh/moduli /etc/ssh/ssh_config /etc/init.d/ssh /etc/pam.d/ssh /etc/default/ssh I have not filed a bug yet. I did not notice problems with any other packages during that upgrade. More recently iceweasel has unclean upgrading from firefox (there's a bug logged). Another common upgrade problem is files moving between packages with missing Replaces. I had one such problem with gnome-games-data versus gnome-icon-theme; I'm yet to file a bug report on that too. I used dselect for the upgrade, which didn't seem to result in any wholesale removals. I had both KDE and GNOME installed.
