Should this go ahead before the freeze? I think yes if the new dask works, but am open to disagreement.

dask #1025393: Probably fixed upstream, but I haven't checked either whether that works or whether it breaks anything else; I'm working on this.

ulmo #1017573: Looks easy to fix but I haven't tried yet.
