After some further discussion and testing, we've decided to split tasksel-meta-faux in to two metapackages. This is currently implemented simply by splitting the list alphabetically and moving lxde to the second list so that it isn't in the same list as gnome-desktop-environment. This isn't an ideal solution and I'd like to find a better way of generating the two lists but it does allow lxde to migrate in my test runs.
