I did ask if the Release team would be interested in an upload (although of a much larger change, admittedly), and they said no. Personally, I view a bug which can destroy a user's file system as being more serious that failing to delete a symlink from a pre-lenny install, but I suppose I should have downgraded the bug report, or explicitly asked if they would be willing to take a smaller change (that would still involve re-rolling the installer image at this late state of the game.)
