Crashes with woody

I'm using Debian woody, with a 2.4.18-pre1 kernel with preempt patch, and everytime I try to install something with apt-get, My computer immediately freezes solid. Is this a kernel problem or have you seen it before. Any response would be appreciated. Thanks
