Here is a question: should an application be able to "take you out of X"? Shouldn't X ideally be able to survive bad applications just like Linux ... ? BTW, on my Radeon, I have experienced X "going down" a couple of times, usually related to playing a movie clip or something like that, smpeg mostly. I do not, at this moment, recall anything else taking down X recently. Though I think there was some other things in the past. (Even then, it was never in "normal X use", it would either be 3D, or other mode switching / fancy features...)
