I would not assume that the settings are the same. Run 'make menuconfig' and check
Be sure of the following are compiled into the kernel: ext2, ext3, reiserfs ide & scsi support for your ide/scsi chips/boards Verify that your lilo.conf has the right settings for partitions and kernel file from the dpkg -i yourkernel.deb How are you getting to a shell to check /var/log <which is a directory not a file???> to look for messages if the kernel panics and halts? If you need more specific help, provide more specifics on your process and StepByStep results.
