you will need to have 'make' and other tools installed in order to do so (ncurses and a bunch of other dependencies)
in your kernel config, go to the power management section and choose the features that you would like to include in your kernel or as loadable modules. after saving your configuration, you'll need to recompile your kernel.
you can use 'make-kpkg' to do it the debian way...
