I'm trying to get Java running with the firefox browser.
Should not be difficult.
I can't seem to find anything under the blackdown packages that will actually work. Seems there are some gcc version problems.
I personally use the Sun JRE, which includes gcc2 and gcc3 versions of the plugin.
I also am not sure what I'm supposed to do with Sun's packages. Too bad they don't have enough sense to put deb's out there.
Sun's .bin package is a self extracting archive (shell script sub with compressed payload attached). Just run it as root and answer the questions.
How do I get java working?
All I really need are Applets since I don't have any real java applications running today. But in the long run, I would prefer to have something with is .deb compatible and full JRE capable.
In my case, I made a symlink from /usr/local/j2sdk1.4.2_03/jre/plugin/ i386/ns610-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so leading to /usr/lib/ mozilla-firefox/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so
It must be a symlink and cannot be the file simply copied over.
As an alternative, you can try java-package, which is in Sid:
Description: A utility for building Java(TM) 2 related Debian packages This package provides the capability to create a debian package from a Java(TM) 2 distribution by just running make-jpkg <filename>. . This program works currently with the latest Java(TM) 2 REs and SDKs (1.3, 1.4 and 1.5) Standard Edition, from Sun Microsystems(TM) and Blackdown Java-Linux.
I have personally not tried it since I only recently found out about it, and I have no desire to muck with a working java installation.
