Interesting,
I find Debian Linux to be the most easiest PPP setup.
All I have is the following
# cat /etc/ppp.options_out
/dev/modem 38400 204.97.69.153:204.97.64.1 defaultroute
note the defaultroute at the end that's what tells pppd to setup the
default route.
