Seems like I had this problem when I first switched to fetchmail from
popclient. It seems you have to specify the user at BOTH ends even if
they are the same on both computers. Like this in .fetchmailrc (unless
the user is running fetchmail himself:

poll orion.aye.net protocol POP3
        username kestrel with password ******** is kestrel here
