OK up to this point -- but really, if you're running a Debian system it's
stupid not to use the tools available (ie kernel-package).

the next step should be (if kernel-package is installed)

make-kpkg clean
make-kpkg --revision [you choose this] kernel_image
dpkg -i [whatever your .deb file turns out to be called]

voila - easy, and dpkg knows about what's going on.

use modconf to configure your modules.
