The only thing that I could suggest is to start 2 x-windows session ie one at 24bpp (your default) and the other one at 16bpp when you want to use wp 8.0. Not sure if this is workable for you since you mentioned that you are short of memory. The overhead in terms of memory usage for the 2nd x-windows is another 6-8 Mb.
