The resolutions your X server supports and will run with are set in the /etc/X11/XF86Config file.
In a "normal" configuration... To change resolutions "on the fly", the three key command: CTRL-ALT-+ (AND YOU HAVE TO USE THE NUMBERPAD'S PLUS KEY) Will cycle through the resolutions set up in the above file.
