The trick (as you showed, but didn't point out) is that you must either have /sbin in you path (which root does) or specifiy it when you try to run ifconfig.
Mere mortals must run ifconfig as such: /sbin/ifconfig Root can just type ifconfig, because /sbin is in his path.
