don't think you need to recompile the kernel what did you do to try to connect? take a look at /etc/inittab if you haven't already it shows some examples for setting up a console on a serial port. make sure its the right kind of cable too, you mentioned using a cross cable ?? shouldn't it be just straight through..(not sure) worth a try though.
