You need to do it excplicitly. kernel-image-2.?.? will never automatically upgrade to different version of kernel in Debian. Just too risky. When looking for new package like this, I would use "dselect" to find latest kernel. This you do not need to worry. You seem to be OK. One reminder, 2.4 kernels are very modular and must be configured using modules otherwise most key functions do not work.
