did you try "raidsetfaulty" ?
        raidsetfaulty /dev/md0 /dev/hda1
        raidhotremove /dev/md0 /dev/hda1
        ..

what does your lilo.conf look like ??
        - does it have initrd.gz in it ??
        - which kernel is in initrd.gz ??
