Excellent essay. Perhaps I will revert some day back to the black screen. I do feel more comfortable with the console than with the gooey, because I can easily read a book that explains what command does what and read the man pages for each command. Having to remember where to click on the other hand can become confusing, especially with the changes that happen so quickly. New features are added to commands, but rarely are they taken away because the potential to break scripts is too great. I am in the process of learning vim. I am weaning myself away from nano. BTW, anyone know why the command visudo launches nano on Debian? On PCLOS (which is supposedly one of the user friendly distros) it lauches vi, like the name implies. One of the reasons I like Debian (and most other GNU/Linux distributions is the ability for the user to choose what is appropriate for them. As one's skill increases, the system can be adapted to suit.
