Most of the time I do restart X with the alt-ctrl-bksp, but that doesn't stop kdm.
It never occurred to me to stop KDM while I am in X, because it is the service that starts X and I just logically concluded (assumed) that shutting down kdm from within X would cause problems. I have learned that there are some things you should only do from a TTY, such as a dist-upgrade. Perhaps it's paranoia, but I've had problems with dist-upgrades in the past, but then again, it was not _real_ Debian that I was running. I am starting to use the tty more and more, and Konsole less and less. Why? Don't really know, but I think that essay found here: http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=6282 made a lot of sense.
