You're right.  Most of the time I do restart X with the alt-ctrl-bksp,
but that doesn't stop kdm.

It never occurred to me to stop KDM while I am in X, because it is the
service that starts X and I just logically concluded (assumed) that
shutting down kdm from within X would cause problems.

I have learned that there are some things you should only do from a TTY,
  such as a dist-upgrade.  Perhaps it's paranoia, but I've had problems
with dist-upgrades in the past, but then again, it was not _real_ Debian
that I was running.  I am starting to use the tty more and more, and
Konsole less and less.  Why?  Don't really know, but I think that essay
found here:  http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=6282  made a lot of
sense.
