Thanks, Doug. It did not occur to me to install another desktop/window manager. I suppose that I could create an alter-ego user and give the KDE environment a try; drive space is not an issue. And I think that, at log-in, GDM allows me to choose the desktop, so another username might not be necessary. I do think that something is broken, because I had several browser crashes yesterday, with iceweasel, galeon, and epiphany, so that browsing is becoming an unpleasant chore.
