Since what you ask is pretty broad, I suggest that you pick a
relatively small app that you use on a regular basis, but see bugs
or limitations in.  This is because you will be better motivated to
work on an app that interests you.

Find the project web site, download the source, build it in debug
mode and explore.  Contact the project's prime developer and tell
him what you told us.  Mention bugs or enhancements you want to
work, and ask him for a push in the right direction.
