I did get this working to my satisfaction, by editing fstab, and adding more mount points in the /media directory. I now can access the aforementioned usb devices simultaneously. There were, though, plenty of worrying signs when I ran dmesg (or, as you stated, "That sounds ugly"). I have an old computer, and I decided to run it without Gnome, KDE, or a display manager. Back to basics. So, I did a lot of screwing around, and now I suspect that many things are not right in this box. However, it hasn't exploded yet; so, for the time being, I'm content.
