I have run into this problem several times lately. I am running
Debian testing. Several web sites I have been on including the
Quebec governments revenue quebec site insist I need Adobe
acrobat pdf reader and won't display messages.

Is there a way to satisfy the website that Evince handles pdf
files as well as Adobe ?
I understood that websites mention a requirement to read a PDF
file, but they were happy to let the user download it anyway or
choose any program to view it. For example, in my Debian Testing
sytem, I do not have the acrobad plugin (that automatically opens a
PDF file within the browser) installed and the browser presents a
dialog box asking me what to do with the PDF file. I save it or
just open it with any application (kpdf, evince, acroread). I have
never had a problem in this.

Could you give the URL of the website you are trying?

The site I was on this morning where it happened was a password
protected site...so no I can't. However it has happened to m e
several times on other sites...none of which I can recall at the
moment..sorry. Normally it works like you have already
described...but every once in a while ( MS-oriented sites) the site
refuses to allow you to open the file unless you have Acrobat
installed. I was wondering what it is they look for.
