If these steps work for you, then you aren't talking about a "containment". You are talking about a "widget" or a "plasmoid". A "containment" is a space in which "widgets" are located. The desktop is one, each panel is another. Under "Appearance Settings", you can choose the type of "containment" the desktop exposes by choosing the "Desktop Activity" -> "Type".
