GNOME is a "desktop environment", fvwm is a "window manager" That is you can use fvwm as a replacement for the window manager provided by GNOME (sorry, don't know what GNOME uses.) or you can just use fvwm with no desktop environment. Have a look at fvwm-crystal and fvwm-themes.
