In following the instructions, and, tring to install the 486 version
of the kernel, I get a screen that states:

Yes, I aborted.
I thought that my message made that clear.
I could not do anything other than abort, in the circumstances.
Do you use LILO?
If so, have you tried editing the lilo.conf file as suggested?
And, what changes do I need to make to the lilo.conf file?

The instructions more or less say, "You need to do this. If you can
