Boot from the install CD, and choose the 'rescue option'. Maybe you have
to download / create a rescue floppy, not sure. You can then load the
kernel from the rescue-CD/floppy and mount your root filesystem with
appending this option to lilo:

boot root=/dev/hdaX
(or something similar).

After this boots you are to login like you were used to. Re-run lilo
(check the config!) and voila, you are up and running again. Remove the
CD/floppy and reboot to check.

I might not be exact, I am in a Windows-only office right now (yuck) so I
cannot check. But I guess above gives you a lot more direction to look
into then just "read the HOWTO"....
