Thats got it.
root@andrew-debian-pc:/home/andrew# dmesg | grep firmware
[ 15.017339] rt61pci 0000:02:05.0: firmware: requesting rt2561s.bin
[ 20.434307] platform r600_cp.0: firmware: requesting radeon/RV730_pfp.bin
[ 20.442403] r600_cp: Failed to load firmware "radeon/RV730_pfp.bin"
[ 20.442413] [drm:r600_do_init_cp] *ERROR* Failed to load firmware!
Looks like I need to install that package then. Thanks
I installed the firmware for the Ralink Wifi card myself from a separate
package, how come thats in its own package not in firmware-linux-nonfree?
What is meant by kernel mode setting?
As I said before I had to edit /etc/modprobe/radeon-kms.conf and change
options radeon modeset=1
to
options radeon modeset=0
I found this out by Googling but Im not really sure how it fixed the problem

The firmware for the radeon HD is in the package firmware-linux-nonfree.
