Thanks. Presumably that aticonfig --initial command makes an alteration to the xorg.conf file to tell it to use the new driver?

OK Ive installed the firmware and its better but not perfect. Full

How do I install the closed source ATI driver?
From memory this should do it (all commands need root privileges):

apt-get install fglrx-driver
mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak
aticonfig --initial
reboot
