For a single user I switched from / + /home to / only. For special tasks I add e.g. /music_productions to /mnt or /home. The advantage to have / only, including /home is, that you don't need think that much about allocation of free space. You anyway can do separated backups. And having tons of individual mounted directories won't speed up anything or won't have any other advantage.
