using the Ubuntu wiki instructions I then tried:
xrandr --output VGA1 --mode 1440x900
and got:
xrandr: cannot find mode 1440x900

What's the output of "xrandr"?
You can try to manually add the desired resolution from there (using
xrandr). Here is a good doc, although it can be a bit oudated, YMMV:
