A reinstall would at least allow you to see whether the problem is
repeatable.

You'll be using the nouveau driver, then. The controller belongs to the
NV40 family.

I don't want to lead you up the wrong path but there is this:

I do not use GNOME but believe there is a fallback mode; you could
investigate using it. Providing the card with more memory via the BIOS
is also an option,
