OK. First off, it's NOT a problem with the NVIDIA driver. I can tell that because you're actually using the intel driver. If you have an NVIDIA device available (either as your only graphics device or as a secondary card), then you have a bigger problem. > > With your indulgence and my apologies for the length of the files, here > they are: (cutting lines which don't seem to be an issue) > > xsession-errors > > gnome-session[3961]: WARNING: Could not parse desktop file > /home/ethan/.config/autostart/xfce4-settings-helper-autostart.desktop: Key > file does not have key 'Name' > gnome-session[3961]: WARNING: could not read > /home/ethan/.config/autostart/xfce4-settings-helper-autostart.desktop Not really a problem, but no bug reported about it either. If you don't use XFCE, don't worry about it. Otherwise, try removing the file, re-running xfce4-settings-helper and saving your session. If the warning returns, raise a bug. > > ** (gnome-settings-daemon:4034): WARNING **: Failed to connect context: > Connection refused > > ** (gnome-settings-daemon:4034): WARNING **: > /usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon-3.0/libupdates.so: undefined symbol: > pk_control_set_root_async > > ** (gnome-settings-daemon:4034): WARNING **: Cannot load plugin 'Updates' > since file '/usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon-3.0/libupdates.so' cannot be > read. > > ** (gnome-settings-daemon:4034): WARNING **: Error activating plugin > 'Updates' You're missing a file from package gnome-settings-daemon. Try reinstalling it. I'm hoping you typed this all in and missed a dot, or otherwise you have a serious issue. (Disk corruption or logging corruption or something really icky) However, look at these "Matched X as autoconfigured driver N" lines. Intel is the most preferred, followed by more generic fallback drivers. The X server doesn't believe you have an NVIDIA card. You are, however, attempting to use the NVIDIA driver for GLX (3D acceleration). That's not going to work. > [ 48.584] (==) Assigned the driver to the xf86ConfigLayout > [ 48.584] (II) LoadModule: "intel" > [ 48.766] (II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/intel_drv.so > [ So, finally, this would appear to be your problem. You can't use the NVIDIA GLX driver without an NVIDIA X driver. And you can't load an NVIDIA X driver without an NVIDIA card. If you DO have an NVIDIA card, then you'll need to debug why X can't find it. If you DON'T have an NVIDIA card, uninstall and purge the nvidia driver, then install libgl1-mesa-dri and libgl1-mesa-glx. > > Much thanks I hope that was enlightening. > > Ethan
