Yes. If you are running GNOME you have probably, though no necessarily, got gdm - gnome desktop manager. It is the application that you use to login. If you describe what you have to do to log in, someone will probably recognise it and can tell you what to do next to change the desktop you use for that session. I am about to go out again.
