Dear All,

is it possible to rsync a virtual machine to a physical machine?

I've tried this, but only a third of all kernel modules were loaded,
especially the network card driver was missing.

For the sake of completeness: this was an Ubuntu machine, but I'd also
be interested to do the same on a Debian box.

Thank you in advance.

I expect it kind of depends on what kind of virtual machine - xen, kvm, container-based, VMware, virtual box, ....

At least for Xen, I'm pretty sure it wouldn't work -- an awful lot of o/s functionality is handled by the hypervisor and Dom0 - so, you can't expect to simply move your virtual machine image onto bare hardware, and have it work.

I'm personally more interested in the other direction - moving a physical machine image into a virtual machine. Not sure that really gets all that much simpler.

You might want to ask that question on the support list for your virtual machine technology.
