Depends on how the initrd is built.

In Debian with initramfs-tools AFAIK it builds in most modules. I copied a 
Debian installation from one ThinkPad to another much newer one and also 
swapped harddisks between an older Dell and a newer FTS workstation and it 
always booted.

Dunno about Ubuntu.

For initramfs-tools there is a configuration file in /etc.
