A question and then I ramble, in part with how this question came up. grub-mkconfig -o <path-to-grub.cfg> Can that be used somehow related to the question being asked here? Or maybe is there some special case use where that would come in handy for someone who wants the file to follow a path somewhere besides /boot/grub/grub.cfg? I just tried it and successfully sent the output to a partition that's purely... junk, no operating system. The ramble: Recently had to learn how to manipulate grub.cfg via /etc/grub.d/40_custom. Was related to attempting to install images by placing directories within /boot. After seeing the warning, guessed there had to be some place grub.cfg pulls from and simply tracked it down. Tiny hit-and-miss learning curve but it's been working well. Personally heeded the grub.cfg warning to not alter that file because it will be erased and replaced BUT... In the back of my mind is an a-sumption that, as long as you don't grub-mkconfig (-o /boot/grub/grub.cfg) or update-grub, you *MIGHT* be ok.. ? :) If I was on a primary production machine, I'd be going by the developers' recommendations. If nothing else, just to save time/headache/heartache should anything crash and burn because of my using not-so-recommended modifications.. Joel's reference to chaining is just the latest I'd seen.. That's the first time I'd understood it (without searching the Net). It's now officially "on the list" to be learned soon. Sure could have used it the last few months. :) Cindy -- Cindy-Sue Causey Talking Rock, Pickens County, Georgia, USA * runs with duct tape * -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe".
