On the command line, "alsamixer" will give you an ncurses based mixer panel. If your outputs are muted or have 0% volume, you won't get sound. You can uninstall pulseaudio with: sudo dpkg --remove pulseaudio (You can always install it again if you want to.) If your audio works with pulseaudio uninstalled, but fails with it installed, then you'll know you have a pulseaudio problem.
