At least on GNOME plugging in an external disk, it should "just work"
but I'm not sure about firewire or Xfce.

My usual choice for laptops would be to get everything Intel, and avoid
Nvidia and any combinations that feature two GPUs. The Intel stuff
usually got the best hardware support (drivers are written before the
hardware is released) and Linux just doesn't have good support for
optimus or whatever it's called. 

I think AMD is quite good nowadays too, but I have no experience with
recent AMD laptops.
