I don't know if this is still an issue: Leave out the firmware stick until asked for. Switch to VC4 before plugging it in and note the device name it uses, probably /dev/sdc or /dev/sdc1. Then switch back to tell it to look for the formware. As it does so, check on VC4 to make sure it looks at your stick. Reasoning: there was an issue reported that it searched IIRC /dev/sdc but not /dev/sdc1 (appropriate for a partitioned stick). Cheers, David.
