As a totally theoretical aside, it should be noted that NNTP is a peer to peer protocol. At one time news servers and spools were so heavyweight that they required a VAX (leading to the client-server model of news that is the only way most people think it can work), but by modern standards the servers require negligible resources and a spool (especially if it only handles a few private newsgoups such as the Debian lists) is small potatoes. Every debian-user subscriber could run a local server for as many of the Debian lists as they chose to subscribe to at a lower cost in resources than running their own mail server.
