And runs great....
I followed those directions and it didn't change anything. I think that is because step number 4 is wrong somehow.
service xinetd restart
That is a commond that is specific ho Red Hat (I think). Try /etc/init.d/xinetd restart (if you have xinetd installed).

I still only get the root KDE desktop at 640x480
If you don't have xinetd installed, then modify the instructions for inetd and restart that.
